Giving Life
The Paines want to share their grief over the loss of their daughter and their pride knowing Ashley has given life to five people with her donated organs. Donnie says his daughter told him what she would want done. "In a tragedy, she has always talked about wanting to help people and I asked 'If something happened to you, what would you want to do?' She didn't hesitate. She would want to donate what organs she could."
Laurie talks about a shirt her daughter constantly wore. "On the front, it says donate life and on the back, it says donate life and donate your organs."
And Laurie says she's thankful Ashley could give life to so many people and is grateful to hear that Jordon Hensley, the recipient of Ashley's heart, is doing well. "As soon as we heard that it went to another 12-year-old, we looked at each other and said Yeah, she picked that one."
The Paines say it's been hard to comprehend all that has happened, but they know they need to stay strong for their other children and for the child they hope to meet soon who now has Ashley's heart.
Five people received Ashley's organs: two in Nashville at Vanderbilt Medical Center, including Jordon Hensley, another in Johnson City, and two others outside of Tennessee.
