About

Goodbye, Dorothy Petrillo Zbornak

Golden Girls star Beatrice Arthur died Saturday of cancer, the Associated Press reports. She was 86.

Known to older generations as "Maude," she was best know to '80s fans as "Dorothy Zbornak," a retiree living in Miami Beach with Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty. Golden Girls ran from 1985 to 1992 before Arthur left the series, reportedly saying she didn't like working as part of an ensemble cast.

In 1983, Arthur starred in another TV series, Amanda's, an U.S. version of Britain's Fawlty Towers. But the series was canceled after only nine episodes. She also had a hilarious role in Mel Brooks' History of the World Part 1 (1981), playing the unemployment office clerk. ("Oh, a bulls--t artist!")

TOP 5 DOROTHY ZBORNAK LINES FROM GOLDEN GIRLS:

5. "You'll have to excuse my mother. She suffered a slight stroke a few years ago which rendered her totally annoying."

4. "You're a furry little gnome and we feed you too much."

3. "Now look here... You withered old Sicilian monkey!"

2. "Of course you hate communism, it's because you were raised a fascist."

1. "How come whenever my ship comes in it's leaking?"

Sweet Bea

I would drop everything to go watch the Golden Girls. Bea was always my favorite. Her perfectly timed humor made that show the best it could be. We all know there will never be another Bea Arthur.

I absolutely love all your shows, especially the golden girls. it's so difficult to overcome the fact that you are no more, i guess we all know that people die and we accept that, but there are some people in life that we just can't emagine to be gone, we just didnt want you to go...
there are such great actors, till born today, but there will never be another Bea. and for this reason, you'll always be in our hearts....because you deserve to be.
Love,
Tahira

Wasn't she just the best?

I have always loved Bea Arthur, and my only regret is that I never saw her in person. When Golden Girls was originally on evening tv, I would miss choir practice just to see her. Bea was a champ! They were all great in their own rights, but Bea could simply give a look or raise an eyebrow and I'd fall in the floor laughing. Rest in peace, Dorothy - There will never be another like you!

My memory

Andrea Luckett Aug 25, 2010

I absolutely love the Golden Girls and they all were Golden Girls in their own right. Their talent, charm, witt, and passion were all what made the show so great both on and off the screen. I think some of who they really were shined through on the screen. Bea Arthur was witty and charming and funny!!! I will miss them all.
