About
Info
Carmen passed away on Saturday evening, surrounded by family following a courageous year long battle with cancer. His story is a familiar one, shared by the many thousands of Italians who immigrated to Canada in the 1950s and 60s. Landing in Halifax in 1957, having crossed the ocean on a ship from Trenta Calabria, with little more than pocket change, he made his way to Toronto to join a few family members. He was later joined by his future wife Rosetta, to start a new life. Although he spoke no English, he leveraged his agricultural skills and strong work ethic to secure work as a landscaper. He eventually assumed ownership of the business, working hard to support his family and to create a better life than the one he left behind in Italy. His greatest passions in life were his family and gardening. He finally retired at the age of 71, but continued to take pleasure in tending to his vegetable garden. Although he can no longer tend to his garden on earth, he will most definitely tend to God’s garden in the sky. He will be greatly missed by Rosetta, his wife of 52 years, his children and their spouses, Daniela and John, Vanda and Michael, Dino and Michica, his grandchildren, Bianca, Felicia, Isabella and Jacob, his surviving siblings and their spouses, especially brother Marcello and sister-in-law Anna, Franca and Benito, Anna and Rita, his sister and brothers in law including Irma and Nick, Bill and Hana and his many nieces, nephews and friends. The family will be receiving guests on Tuesday May 8th, at Glendale Visitation Centre, 1810 Albion Road at Hwy 27, during the hours of 2-4 and 6-9pm. The funeral mass will take place on Wednesday May 9th at 1pm, at Transfiguration Parish, 45 Ludstone Drive in Etobicoke (Kipling & Dixon). Burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in support of son-in-law Michael’s Ride to Conquer Cancer (www.conquercancer.ca/goto/MichaelG-12) and St. Joseph’s Health Centre. Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and support staff at St. Joseph’s for their attention and compassion over the past year.

Carmen's love for his family was evident in all that he did and shared with those who had the pleasure of knowing him widening the circle of his family and friends.
His passion of gardening trickled to all those he knew and he shared with joy his experience and fruits of his passion with family, friends, neighbours etc... Every year, his garden of flowers and vegetables were shared with joy with all of us.
I am privileged and fortunate to have known this kind and generous man and have been afforded a gift of love that he shared with joy to those who knew him.
May God keep you safe and in his care and tending too the bountiful gardens in heaven with the same passion you did here on Earth.
Your teachings of kindness, love and charity will be continued and shared with all of our own families.
My deepest condolences to the whole Provato family and may you find strength in the love that surrounds you during this difficult time.
