About

Chief

In the news:

The body of police chief Michael Todd was found next to a half-empty bottle of gin, a source close to the investigation said.

The 50-year-old's coat had also come off and some of his clothes were discovered nearby.

But the source, who did not want to be named, dispelled rumours that the Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable was half-naked or that there were signs of his wrists being cut.

He said: "The body was found next to a half-full bottle of gin, slumped face down on a gentle slope. There was no evidence of any pills or tablets but that is something the coroner will have to look at. Members of the team covered his face as a mark of respect.

"His jacket was found nearby. It is nonsense that he was half-dressed. He could have walked down the street without anyone raising an eyebrow."

He added that it was possible Mr Todd was suffering from hypothermia, saying: "He would have had mobile reception up there, probably. There were no signs of slit wrists, I believe.

"I have seen suicide cases on the mountain before where people have taken alcohol and pills before taking their life. It is conceivable he drank too much and that hastened the onset of hypothermia."

A post-mortem examination on the body of Mr Todd has revealed "no obvious cause of death", the coroner for North West Wales said.

Mr Todd's suspected suicide is being linked to his alleged extra-marital affairs, it has been suggested.

The highly-respected Chief Constable was found dead on Bwlch Gas in Llanberis, North Wales, on Tuesday. The father-of-three had dumped his car in Church Road, Llanberis, before walking five miles. He was 20 minutes from the summit when he died.
