Healdton police and Carter County deputies are investigating the death of a woman found unconscious and lying in a pool of blood at a local residence Saturday night.

The victim was identified Sunday as Connie Griffith, who was also known as Connie Whitlock.

Police responded to a call for help from a Rocky Road residence. When they arrived on the scene they found the victim, who appeared to have suffered head injuries. She was taken by ambulance to Mercy Memorial Health Center in Ardmore, where she died a short time later. Deputies were called in to assist with the investigation.

District Attorney Craig Ladd called the woman's death "very suspicious," adding the victim's body was taken to the state medical examiner's office for autopsy.

"I've talked with the ME's office and hope to have some preliminary information by Monday," Ladd said.

No arrests were immediately made, but there were "persons of interest," he said.
