She was the wife of Martin Luther King Jr., and a civil rights activist, and community leader in her own right. Although she was born in Alabama to uneducated parents, the value of education was impressed upon her from an early age. She graduated at the top of her highschool class in 1945 and was admitted to the music program at the newly racially integrated program oft Antioch College. She became politically aware and active at college joining the NAACP and Civil Liberties committees. She married Martin Luther King in 1953, and went on to raise four children.
She continued on with her civil rights work, and her work at the King Centre until her health failed. She declared in 2004 that same-sex marriage is a civil rights issue. She died of advanced ovarian cancer.
