Update continuing Tues Oct 3rd

Cheryl Nov 05, 2009

It was a very upsetting day after learning Den was under-medicated for 4 1/2 days. I am really troubled this happened to him! The nurse evidently didn't have to call the order in for morphine and ativan, because it was already in the house since Den 1st became a hospice patient. If she did have to call it in, it probably would have been caught.
The dosage she told him to take for morphine was less than what he has been taking these past months for the percocets and oxycontin but the difference now is he is in much, much more pain and needed more meds, not less!.
He said he was in so much pain he chewed 2 oxycontin (on Thurs or Friday) but it made he very sick, throwing up. He said he just wanted to relieve the pain. That's not a good thing by what Diane was saying, to chew them.
But that does gives us an idea what he was going through to feel the need to do that.

I try to think like Den does and not let what is out of my control bother me but I AM bothered by this! I just feel it took precious time away from him, and he suffered unnecessarily.
Den isn't going to let it get to him, cause that's Den. There's nothing we can do to change what's done.

So, I will keep to myself what I really think, what I really would like to say and what I really would like to do about it and instead not lose focus away from Den.
What's done is done. This was not talked about at all to Den after the fact and will not be because if he wanted to talk about it, he would have brought it up after Diane left. So we leave it alone~

Diane discussed her concern about him climbing the stairs, she recommended a cane to take pressure off his left leg/left side when he gets up and moves around, a chair for showering, a transport chair if he'd like to go out. All of those Den said, no, no no to, in a pleasant way of course.

She said I understand you surrendered your license. He danced around that and didn't give an answer but did say, when he feels better, maybe he can drive locally.
I hate to say I don't see that happening but it's good I guess that he's trying to stay positive.

I guess it's safe to say there will be no life alert system installed in his house because that will go against what he has planned. His has a DNR and his illness has no chance of going away, so why call for help from the authorities. The life alert will bring the police/fire/ambulance which isn't what he wants.

While Diane was still there he said he was craving chinese food and asked me to call our sister Barbara to see if she would pick an order up cause she was planning to come visit during a long lunch break.
Diane was concerned about MSG but Den said it's never bothered him before so Diane thought he would probably be okay considering he doesn't have a huge appetite anyways.

Diane said she'd be back Thurs morning. I called Barb and the order in. He got spare ribs, chicken fingers and rice I believe. He ate a small amount and said he heated some up later that night.....he also had scrambled eggs too, before Diane came! So this is good! The ativan is helping the nausea so he has an appetite some.

Had a nice visit with Barb. When she left, Den, April and I were there and I said...she is such a beautiful person, inside and out. Den had his head leaning on his hand on the end of the couch and he smiled and shook his head.
I was telling April, that she was always very lady like even as a little girl, she always had nice nails, she wouldn't climb out the bedroom window and down the gutter with Nancy and I to sneak out, ...lol
Then I said....then there's the other 2 (meaning Nancy and I) and Den speaks up and chuckles....yup, beating up the boys lol they were tom boys lol...we laughed lol...but his words are true lol
Nancy and Barb got a kick out of it when I told them later on.
It amazes me how Den still has humor, he just makes me smile!

I left around 2ish to let April and Den have time alone. April said the new meds came while she was still there but Den wanted to wait to put the fentynil patch on cause he wanted to shower 1st and then was going to nap. He took care of it while we were gone.

Before leaving, I asked him if I could call around 5 and come back later on. He said yes
When I did call he said Rob and George were thereand that he'd see me in the morning. They left around 8 Den said.
