Damn... It is sad to see a pioneer pass, I just found out and its almost a month later. Wild Style was and is my favorite movie and the scene where he is demonstrating a certain freeze in the park, sticks out in my mind. One of my favorite B-Boys, Rest In Peace my brother..
I was in school at PS 52 in Manhattan and the Master Disaster crew ran the school my crew.We would fly our colors and 1 day crazy legs and his people rocked their colors and we challenged them to a battle. We were about knives and guns so we came prepared to battle,When they showed up they came with a radio and ready to dance thats where I met FROSTY the coolest dude ever because what he did wasn't an act but who he was genuine and from the heart, a pure BUG OUT. I lost touch for a while 15 years but a couple of years ago they had a hip hop summit in Harlem and guess who I ran into and he was still the same dude. We caught up on some shit and I introduced him to my son Chris.2 weeks later I ran into CL in Chinatown told him I saw freeze in Harlem and got no reaction. Oh yeah freeze told me he hadn't spoken to him for about 5 years.
In the 80s i was break dancing with freeze. He was good but i was better. I hurt my hip on a over the top b bomb drop. He took over and everttime i saw him, from my wheelchair, i would just be in awe and say " yeah baby go for it." In later life frosty and I hung out at the Manhole bar. A Popular place for men who acted like men, manly men, men with masculine manly traits. Nothing but men here! Yes sir! Yep Frosty ruled!
Man.. it was great to see him in action at school dances, block parties, building yards (All you needed was cardboard, a boom box / Ghetto Blaster... And let the battles begin...
I have yet to be impressed with break dancers the way I was left at awe by watching Frosty and the members of the Rock Steady Crew back in the early 1980's...
Watching Frosty Freeze in Style Wars and Wild Style as a kid growing up in Amsterdam (Europe) is one of my richest memories. You were "just" a bunch of kids having fun in the Bronx and you lit up the world. Now Hip Hop is here to stay and you are one of the true innovators. Rock on. You were taken too young.
This is TRACER... your sidekick, right hand man and best friend for many years 1981-2000 (now living in miami)...I only recently heard about your sickness and death and it has saddened me greatly...there are so many memories and things we had gone through togetther.. wish i coulda said goodbye in person...time to go to my storage and dig out our old pics.
i pray that the soul of this good brother is in the Hands of the all mighty ...Can you tell my Mom about bboying up there ? be blessed and rest in God's peace
Frosty Freeze saved my life on various occassions when other graffitti writers wanted to kill me! Thank you Frosty!
