Dragon

kp: What is the correct pronunciation of Gygax (is it guy-gacks or jai-gacks)?
gg:
Auf (Switzer) Deutsche, it is "Ghe-gox." Many of the family use that pronounciation. My part of the family has Americanized to be pronounced "Guy-gacks."

kp: Do you have 20-sided dice hanging from your rear-view mirror?
gg: No, nor do I own an auto

kp: Who are some of your favorite artists? Authors?
gg: I find Chinese landscapes compelling. Also Monet and most of the other French impressionists rate high in my esteem. As for authors, I read many. In fantasy/SF Jack Vance is my absolute favorite, but many others are enjoyed. In the original AD&D DMG I give a list of many such in an appendix.

kp: What is more important - strength or charisma?
gg: Or perhaps Intelligence? It depends on the campaign, the person playing the character, the DM too. In a campaign that has much roleplay, I'd rate Charisma higher. In one that is mainly H&S, go for Strength every time.

Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons and one of the fathers of tabletop role playing games, died on Tuesday at the age of 69. He had suffered from heart problems.

Gygax was best known for helping create Dungeons & Dragons and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, and pioneered tabletop role playing games. The first D&D rulebooks were released in 1974 by TSR, Inc, and since then produced three full-fledged sequels, numerous revisions and updates, and dozens upon dozens of additional rulebooks, settings, and campaigns. While Gygax hadn't had much direct involvement with D&D for many years, he developed and contributed to many role playing games, Troll Lord Games' Gary Gygax's Fantasy Worlds.
