Tragic Death of Father & Son
Gary Proctor, 47, and his son James, 16, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, died in hospital after their Fiat Punto collided with an Audi Quattro on the M62 in Greater Manchester.
A 44-year-old woman, who was also in the Punto, was injured but remains in a stable condition at hospital.
The driver of the Audi, a 31-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol.
He remains in custody and is being questioned.
The collision happened on the westbound carriageway of the motorway between junctions 19 and 20 at Rochdale and close to Birch Services.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said shortly before the crash took place, just before 6am on Sunday, motorists in South Yorkshire had witnessed the Audi being driven at high speed.
Inspector Andy Hudson, who is leading the inquiry, said: "This is an absolute tragedy for this family who were going to Manchester Airport to start their summer holiday in America.
"Our thoughts are with them all. We need anybody who saw the Audi being driven, possibly at speed, along the westbound carriageway of the M62 to get in touch.
"Any information will help the inquiry and we ask people contact us as a matter of urgency."
