What made George Carlin Stand out from his contemporaries was his ability to change with the times and stick it out, no matter what. He could've remained safely "button-down" and played to the masses, but he saw that thinking-person's comedy was needed. Sure, he got his fair share of Hell because of it, but he also changed today's comedy into what its supposed to be - thought provoking AS WELL AS entertaining. He ranks up there with Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce, and Ben Stein as being the current version of the jester.
Carlin once said he was most proud of being a footnote in Supreme Court history with his participation in an obscenity suit related to "the seven words you can't say on television." Amen, brother! I'll also remember him for the "shell-shock" monologue (look it up - it has even more meaning now) and his wry commentary such as "who empties the wishing well?" He didn't believe in a traditional God, but I hope the handrail on the escalator to Heaven doesn't go faster than the stair he stood on.
