My memory - DBC

William Alverson Sep 23, 2009

I dedicated my days lately to what I call the Dead Boys Club or just DBC. DBC = great friends of mine that died way too soon and way too young, mostly from the big A. The dedication helps me focus and try my best just for that day (for all those who didn't even get the chance). Today was Greg McGreevy Day, I did a google search and there he was. Brought tears to my eyes and many memories.

I met Greg at UCLA (Gay Students Union) to be more precise. We were buds (just friends) on campus and the last time I saw him was at our college graduation in 1977, but I still think of him occasionally and obviously today. I moved off to San Francisco in 1978, where I stll live and by buddha's grace survived the epidemic.

Thanks for the memories

ciao

My Memory

Kevin Michael McGreevy Feb 21, 2009

Thank you Steven for this tribute to Gregg. It has brought tears to my eyes. It has already been 18 years since Gregg passed away. Sadly, I lost my only other brother, Brian recently. He died at age 50 a year ago. I miss them both.
Gregg was a wonderful person who died way too soon. He was a person of integrity and idealism. He was smart, honest, courageous, a great friend and a lot of fun. I think his idealism stands out the most.

My Memory

Gregg was my best friend in college. I had a dream about him recently and in the morning searched the internet for information about him and was disappointed to find very little. As a result I started this page.

I met Gregg when he was my downstairs neighboor in my college apartment on Strathmore and Levering, just a few block from UCLA. I had just moved in with two roommates I did not know well. We became instant friends. I felt so privileged to become close to this exceptionally warm, smart, fun person. Gregg expanded my life view radically within a few months of our meeting. He was so honest about who he was in the world and so willing to question the expectations society had set for him. He was dripping with integrity....more comfortable in his own skin than anyone I've met before or since. Gregg was extremely outgoing, and seemed to know everyone. I have hundreds of memories of him...at the beach, at school, and exploring Los Angeles.

I remember once Gregg and I gave a party and two people got the date wrong and came a WEEK early. They brought food. I wasn't sure what to do when I answered the door (Gregg and I were sitting around watching TV), but Gregg immediately invited them in for a "practice" party. We ate their food and had a lot of fun. They didn't come back in a week for the real party. But Gregg was like that.....spontaneous and optimistic.

Gregg would often come upstairs to my apartment after a test, a day at school, or (often) a date, and we would lay on the floor in my bedroom and talk about it. I remember most is how lucky I felt to be the person, for far too short a time, that he would share his hopes and vulnerabilities with lying in there in the dark.
