Holding candles in the dark, about 50 people gathered for an impromptu vigil Tuesday night at the apartment complex where slain Hser Nay Moo lived with her family.
Well-wishers formed a circle near the driveway into the South Salt Lake complex and shared their grief and condolences for the 7-year-old's family.
Dorothy Yazzie and her daughter Carmelita drove to the complex from West Jordan when they heard the news that the girl's body had been found. Young Carmelita said they came "because we are sad."
"I'm heartbroken over it," Dorothy Yazzie said.
Nearby a hand-lettered sign read: "You are never so lost that angels can't find you." Pink ribbons were tied on trees around the complex, and pink flowers and candles were laid at its entrance.
Christie Redfield of West Valley City had searched earlier in the day with the volunteer effort, and had gone to Liberty Park on her own to watch for the girl. Hearing the child's body had been found, she said, was "devastating. I broke down in tears - a little girl taken away from her family."
William Green also had helped with the the search, and he headed to the complex with a candle when he heard of Hser's death. "I lost a little girl when she was born so I know what they're going through," he said.
