About

Jerry

Mr. Jerry Avant 39 formerly of Rockingham N.C died Sunday, March 29, 2009 in Carthage N.C as a result of injuries sustained in the tragedy at Pinelake Healthcare and Rehabilatation Center.
Jerry was born in South Korea on November 5, 1969, to Jerry W. Avant and the late Yon Suk Yi. He graduated from Richmond Senior High School in 1988, and served in the United States Coast Guard for 10 years following graduation. Commited to helping others, he graduated from Sandhills Community College with a degree in nursing and was an LPN at Pinelake Healthcare and Rehabilatation center, and had just finished his course of study and was preparing to take his board exams to become a Registered Nurse. He attended Cornerstone Baptist Church.
He gave his life in the protection of others, and his heroism leaves both a great since of pride and saddness in all those who knew him and loved him.
Jerry is survived by his fiance' Jill Degarmo of Carthage; his father Jerry W Avant of Rockingham; his paternal grandmother, Evelyn Avantof Rockingham; a sister Frances Greene of Rockingham; a nephew Joshua Greene of Rockingham; three nieces, Britany Birdsong, Kailee Birdsong, and Peyton Greene all of Rockingham.
Our family was so blessed to have had Jerry Lee as a son, grandson, brother, uncle and cousin. To me and I'm sure to many others he is the epitome of selflessness and bravery. He has been and will always be an inspiration to me. I know his life was cut short and we don't understand why things like this happen, and the grief is painful and overwhelming at times, but God is present. I know my brother walked with God and God walked with my brother on that day. The peace and comfort I have is the peace that only God can give . A peace that passeth all understanding. I know Jerry Lee is in Heaven and I know he would want for us to go forth in life with joy and happiness and to cherish the good times and fond memories we have of him. I try not to dwell on the terrible loss we suffered. Instead, I hope his heroism will always be remembered. I would also like to take this oppotunity to thank those who reached out to our family with cards, flowers, donations in his honer to ST. Jude's Children Research Hospital and most of all for the outpouring of kindness, thoughtfulness and prayers.

My memory

Rhonda Whitlock Aug 02, 2011

Your laughter will always remain a sweet memory. Miss you so badly. But I know it's like the song says "When we all get to Heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be".

For Frances and family

Although I never knew your brother personally. I was blessed to have you as a coworker. You always spoke highly of him . You could tell there was and always be a love for him that will cherish in you forever. When i look at you I saw peace and you never were angry or mad. I picture the same for your brother. I pray that everyday God walks with you and in your heart to guide you through this tragedy. On that day you lost a brother but Heaven gained a glorious angel , who who was a brave warrior and im sure he's in heaven helping several others as he did on earth. God bless you Frances and family .

Jerry Lee you were such a good and cute kid growing up. You never gave daddy an ounce of trouble. You were so smart ,always reading and studying, very active in sports mainly basketball. I always looked up to and admired my big brother. You grew up to be such a caring and honerable man. I couldn't of hand picked a better brother. There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about you. My heart shattered into a million pieces the day you left us. Somedays the grief and pain is so intense I find it difficult to make it through the day. But God is who gives me the strength and comfort to deal with the agonizing pain of losing you. (Matthew 5 ; 4). God reminds me that I can take what I've learned from your life and death use it in a way that carries on your legacy. I try to take my life's calling more seriously now I try to love more, give more, trust more, forgive more and rejoice more. You chose to live your life for God and this makes me so proud of who you are and motivates me to better myself everyday. I know that physically you are no longer here. But knowing that our spirit never dies helps me remember the precious spiritual bond we share. The promise of knowing I will see you again oneday in Heaven. (John 11;25). Someday we'll walk down the the streets of gold together where time has no end. This is my hope and what puts joy in my heart and a smile on my face! Thank you God for this!

I love you and miss you dearly
Your sister Frances Greene
