About

Died on the Fourth of July

The five-term Republican senator passed away at around 1:15 a.m. in Raleigh, the Jesse Helms Center announced on its website. His former chief of staff, Jimmy Broughton, is quoted by WJLA as saying that he died of natural causes.

Helms is best known as a hardline conservative who championed "Old South" values. He chaired the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee through most of former President Bill Clinton's term, frequently blocking presidential appointments and Democratic bills that he was dubbed "Senator No" by critics.

Helms began his career in the Senate in 1972, becoming the first Republican to be elected from the Tar Heel State to the legislative body in the 20th century. He subsequently won four successive re-election bids, retiring only in 2003 because of his poor health.

Missing Senator Helms

Kristy Jul 10, 2008

What a great Senator Jesse Helms was. To have never lost a political race is quite an accomplishment. I hope those who have opposed him realize that those who voted him into office are walking along side you even now and are continuing to vote for the values Senator Helms upheld. Knowing this state put him into Senate for as long as they did is only one of the many reasons I am proud to be from North Carolina. If you saw him in a negative light I implore you to look beyond secondhand information and read first hand his voting record (which is public information for those of us who like to make up our own mind about things rather than having our opinions handed to us by a third party). He believed every person was created equal in the eyes of God and voted to protect each one of this states citizens, even those who hated him. As for moral issues, if you disagreed with Jesse Helms and oh so many other more conservative thinkers please don’t take it out on us because sadly we can’t take credit for the ideals we try to uphold but rather look to God and the Bible from which the nation was knitted together. That is definitely who your disagreement is with.

WHAT A SENATOR!

DAVID RADFORD Jul 08, 2008

I WAS PROUD THAT JESSE HELMS REPRESENTED NORTH CAROLINA AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. WE WERE FORTUNATE TO HAVE HIM, HE ALWAYS SAID WHAT HE THOUGHT AND NEVER WAVERED. WHEN JIM HUNT RAN AGAINST HIM, I BECAME OFFICIALLY WHAT I HAD ALWAYS BEEN -- A REPUBLICAN! REST IN PEACE, JESSE...........................

My Experience with the Great Sen. Helms

Nick Nicodemus Jul 08, 2008

This man was acknowledged and voted the most friendly, curteous member of Congress consistantly. Why, because he was just that. Of course detractors try to make it wrong for him to stand up to those who viciously attacked, placed blocks in legislation he advocated. For them it was being cruel for him to use the same tactics to block thier efforts. Liberals all have the same tac, they will say and do anything to make the USA just like Bangladesh. Read their icon Dr. Rawls. Senetor Helms was stalwart, brave, and bold in opposition to that sort of character. He alone stood up to the UN and got that lame outfit to somewhat be improved. Only a Helms could and would do that, others jjust lay back and let someone else do the heavy lifting. Senator Helms was tuned into the people he represented, and he represented all regardless of race, political persuasion, whatever. if you had a legitimate problem, Helms came to your aid. The Democrats of Charlotte having difficulty with the status with Germans exhaused their impotent and in power fellow democrats, and a last hour appealed to Jesse who helped the airport and NC. It was a legitimate difficulty. Sen. Helms always replied to letters, calls. I found him uplifting, and am proud to call him friend, and my advocate in congress. He will be missed by me and those like me to our own graves. Few men earn the respect Jesse Helms has earned. His detractors can go on and continue to criticize him, and in doing so they admit he was by far the better man. God Bless Jesse and take him into your arms. Nobody deserves it more.
