Tragedy

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (AP) -- An Ohio University-Chillicothe basketball player died after collapsing during practice.

Jonathan Davis, 20, a sophomore from Hampton, Va., fell to the floor Monday evening and was taken to Adena Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, school spokesman Jack Jeffery said.

The school was not aware that Davis had any health problems, he said. A message was left with the county coroner.

The school suspended men's and women's sports events and practices. Grief counselors were made available for teammates and classmates.

The school is about 45 miles south of Columbus and is a branch of Ohio University's main campus in Athens.

Memorial arrangements are pending.

Jonathan volunteered to play the drums for the Union Zion Gospel Chorus. We were so excited that a young man would come from Hampton, VA. to little old Ware Neck (Gloucester County), VA. to play drums for a little old country church. Immediately he was accepted as one of the family. We were also so pleased with his ability to really play the drums and with his patience with our choir.

We knew almost instantly that there was something special about this young man. His smile, his kindness, his easy goingness, and most of all, his love of Jesus. Hallelujah!

To know a young man with such gifts, such joy, such love of the Lord in today's world is a blessing. After witnessing the wonderful words spoken about him at his funeral, I know that his living was not in vain. How proud his parents, grandparents, little sister and others must be of him. He's done more good in his short 20 years than most people do in 50-60 years. Thank you Lord for allowing the members of Union Zion Baptist Church an opportunity to get to know Jonathan Mason-Davis.

May his family find peace in knowing that he was greatly loved and that God now has an even better plan for him. What an angel.

My Memory

Adrienne Bowers Feb 09, 2008

When I first joined our high school’s marching band you went out of your way to make me feel special, by greeting me with a hug and a word of encouragement. I will forever cherish the memories I have of attending different family functions at your grandparents’ house, sitting in on your basketball practices at church, talking to you for hours online through instant messaging and the brief time that we worked together at Hampton University. Since you were unable to complete your undergraduate degree, I will dedicate my degree to you when I graduate from VCU. I love my “king” and I will truly miss him. I am very thankful for the time God allowed us to have together. Jon and his family are in my prayers every night.

Love your “little princess” (as Jon has always called me)
