Tragic Death of Race Competitor
The Race The Rockies Adventure Race in Golden had to be called off after the tragic death of one of the race competitors.
Marty Lund, 46, of White City, Saskatchewan, was found unresponsive by another team of race competitors at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday July 19 in the Beaverfoot Range area of the race course near Mount Seven.
The competitors called on their radios for medical assistance and began administering CPR.
B.C. Ambulance Service, Golden RCMP and Golden & District Search and Rescue (SAR) were called in, but because the man was in the backcountry, SAR, along with a helicopter service attended the scene. But Lund, according to RCMP, was already deceased by the time he was transported off the mountain.
There were 81 competitors in the race this year, and this was to be Lund's third time participating in the Race the Rockies event. Wayne Bingham, media relations liaison with Race the Rockies, said that organizers are unsure whether the race will continue next year.
In a press release from Race the Rockies, officials and volunteers said they are deeply saddened at the loss of their friend and colleague, and wish to express their deepest sympathies and condolences to his family. The Golden RCMP would also like to extend their condolences to Lund's friends and family.
Lund's family were notified, and the RCMP and the BC Coroner's office are investigating the events that lead up to the man's death.
