Meg Burgess Tribute

The family of a three-year-old girl killed when a 6ft wall collapsed on her last night paid tribute to their “special princess”.

Megan Burgess was crushed when breeze blocks from a wall built a week ago tumbled down on top of her as she was walking along Ffordd Penrhwylfa, Prestatyn with her baby brother Wilson and mum Lindsay, on Saturday morning.

Lindsay frantically clawed off the rubble to try and reach her daughter but Megan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Last night, relatives described Megan as “the most perfect daughter in the world.”

They said she was a “shining star to all who met her and would be sorely missed.”

Meanwhile dozens of mourners gathered yesterday to lay teddy bears and flowers at the spot where the toddler died.

Tearful parents and children from the Tiny Tots nursery in Prestatyn joined to read out prayers and comfort each other at the place where “princess” Megan Burgess died.

A tiny pair of white sandals, a photograph and a children’s glitter art set were placed on a piece of rubble amid a carpet of floral tributes.

Lindsay and husband Peter were too upset to talk and wept as “Meggy’s” nursery class passed the family home and walked silently to the scene.

Many broke down in tears as poems and prayers were read in memory of the toddler who attended Tiny Tots.

A message left on a website by devastated photographer Lindsay read: “A horrible tragedy, a beautiful child. Incredibly cherished and very loved. She was so special, those that know her, know why.”

A family statement released last night siad: “Meg had a very special gift of knowing how others felt.

“We feel she was too pure to stay with us.

“We are grateful to have had her for the time we did.”

One resident who lives nearby said: “Nobody seems to know what happened, the wall just caved in.

“The house was unoccupied at the time and was being renovated. The wall was only built last week.

“It is such a terrible tragedy, the little girl only lived about 100 yards away.

“It is so sad to know that the wall collapsed the very second the child was walking by.”

One floral message left at the scene said: “To Meg, You will be sadly missed. You were always enjoying yourself, you were a beautiful, clever and caring young lady – a princess in our eyes.

“We will always be thinking of you. Rest in peace, your ever-loving grandad Jimbo and grandma May.”

Police, health and safety officers and Denbighshire County Council officials are still examining the area, which has been taped off as a crime scene.

The recently constructed wall had been on land adjoining an unoccupied detached house.

It is believed to have been holding back mounds of earth.

Temporary traffic lights have been installed along the road and an excavator has removed most of the fallen masonry and debris.

A North Wales Police spokeswoman said the incident is still under investigation.

The North Wales coroner has been informed and a post mortem is yet to be carried out.
