I had the great privilege and honor of meeting Sgt German and other great heroes during a fund raiser in the spring of 2007. Although my service as a Marine ended 20 years before Merlin's began we, like all Marines were brothers. Being in his presence I felt like a very small and insignificant man. Merlin was a man among men and a warrior among Marines. He provided such encouragement to the other Marines and sailors at BAMC. When I learned of his passing it greatly affected me and still does to this day. It is very hard to hear his name and not have my throat close.
To put it Sgt German’s own words:
Got 3% chance of living…
What you gonna do?
1. Fight through
2. Stay strong
3. Over come because I am a warrior
4. All of the above
I am so deeply saddened and heartbroken of hearing that Merlin has passed. I met Merlin at Brooke when my son was injured. I lived for several months with Merlin and his family at the Fisher house. I was so honored to have known such a wonderful and devoted family. Merlin was not only a true hero but a wonderful caring and compassionate man. Merlin had known that I was struggling with severe back pain and everytime that I saw him he would ignore the obvious pain that he was experiencing and show his sincere concern for me. That was the way that he was. If there was another soldier struggling Merlin would put his own situation aside to tend to the needs of others. He was truly the most inspirational person that I have ever had the honor of knowing. To Merlin's mom my heart cries for you. Even through the language barrier, the caring and understanding between two moms always showed through. You were truly an inspiration to me as a mom. It was the hardest experience that I have ever been through and my journey with my son was minor compared to what you as a mom have endured. I wish that I could take that pain away from you. But always know that Merlin touched many many hearts of many mom's and many people and his legacy will live on. It will always live on in me. He was and will always be inspiration in my life and I was truly honored to have know such a wonderful human being.
My mother called me today to tell me about your son's story in the local paper. She was so touched about the dance and the beautiful song in honor of you. We were both in tears for your loss. Merlin must have been an extraordinary person. Our prayers are with you.
Thank you Sgt. Merlin for your profoundly heroic service and sacrifice. And to your family and friends, I offer my heartfelt condolences for your tremendous loss.
I also could not stop crying after seeing what this courageous young man had endured and in spite af all the loss and pain and suffering, how he remained hopeful and helpful and loving. I hope he is resting in peace and love.
I have just read the article of your struggle to overcome and was moved to tears . You are a true hero and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you did for me and our country.. I just finished reading MSN's article on Merlin. Thank you so much Merlin for giving the ultimate sacrifice to defend America's freedom. Thank you for showing, not only your family and friends, but the entire country what it takes to be a HERO! I can not express how sorry I am to your family. I will always keep you in my heart. Without even knowing it, you showed this man what it takes to be a GREAT person. I only hope that I can be a 1/4 a man as you were. One day I hope to find you in Heaven to give you the biggest handshake. Thank you for defending our county as you did!
