My Memory

Brett Wagner Jul 30, 2008

I had the great privilege and honor of meeting Sgt German and other great heroes during a fund raiser in the spring of 2007. Although my service as a Marine ended 20 years before Merlin's began we, like all Marines were brothers. Being in his presence I felt like a very small and insignificant man. Merlin was a man among men and a warrior among Marines. He provided such encouragement to the other Marines and sailors at BAMC. When I learned of his passing it greatly affected me and still does to this day. It is very hard to hear his name and not have my throat close.

To put it Sgt German’s own words:

Got 3% chance of living…
What you gonna do?

1. Fight through
2. Stay strong
3. Over come because I am a warrior
4. All of the above

Merlin’s answer was always #4

God bless Sgt Merlin German, his comrades, all our Marines, service men and women.

To the German’s- Thank you for giving us one of the greatest men and Marines that I have ever met in my entire life.

Semper Fi!
