Michael Jackson, the onetime child star turned King of Pop, died in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon after suffering an apparent cardiac arrest in his home. He was 50 years old.

Jackson was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center not far from his rental mansion in the Holmby Hills. The cause of death wasn't known. An autopsy is set for Friday.

"It's a very sad day for all of us," Jackson's manager, Frank DiLeo, tells PEOPLE. " It's such a terrible shame. He was my friend." As for Jackson's three children – Blanket, 7, Paris, 11, and Prince Michael, 12 – DiLeo says, "The kids are very upset, but they are fine."

The entertainer was stricken Thursday afternoon and a 911 call was placed. "His personal physician, who was with him at the time, attempted to resuscitate Jackson, as did paramedics who transferred him," according to a statement from the hospital.

I have been a fan of yours since the first time I heard blame it on the boogie and then you blew me away with the off the wall album and from there you had me hooked.I will love and admire you the rest of my life and it pains me to my heart when haters say bad things about you that it makes me made and I defend your honor because they nothing about you and they have such a miserable life that they have to say bad things about you.You are always on my mind 24/7 a day and I drive my family crazy talking about you but if there is one person and have my favorite singer it would only be you,you have given me the drive to dance because I didn't know how until I heard you and now part of my life is broken because you are not here with us.Everyday when I get depressed and all I have to do is listen to your voice and songs and it brightens my day but then I am also still a little sad because you are no with us.You have given so much to me with your music and your dance I wish that I could repay you in some way,I have even decided to get a tattoo of an insporational message and I have always told my nieces to never put a mans name on them but I am going back on my word and I'm going to put ur name on me because you are insporational to me and everytime I look at it it will lift me up,I hope that god will forgive me for having tattoo's but I look at it as art.I love and miss you everyday of my Life Michael aand Happy Birthday!!!!!

Most of us adore his smile, eyes, music, style but what seemed more important was the LIGHT and the AURA that radiated through the whole being Michael Jackson. Like some magical power that light transcended on millions of people changing their lives in the process to become more aware of what is needed in this World - simply L.O.V.E. People from high State to the normal every day people always talked about this, that there was something special going on whenever MJ crossed their paths. And it was not just fanatical fantism though that existed full well, it was rather that there was this indescribable attention that only Michael could command. Many say he was not of this World, and I say this, I believe in that, there was something so special about Michael that cannot be explained away in normal terms. This is the reason why I think that his death had such an enormous impact on the world population, for I feel that they must have felt it too. A simple boy, that was made to propel to Super Stardom with only one Mission in mind, To HEAL THE WORLD. It has a familiar ring to it from some 2000 years ago, and I wonder at times what if....... He changed my life forever I know that much, I know what I am here for now, thanks to Michael Jackson. I miss him forever and want him to know that millions received his message and abide to it. LOVE ALWAYS Michael where ever you are♥♥♥

My dearest Michael, you are very special, i always loved you as the greatest entertainer of all time, im in love with every song you have created. you are one of a kind, i grew up with your music, i was born in 1957, I think of you everday and asked why, you were to young,to leave, you always put a smile on me with your beautiful smile, i never believed in all the scandel , always believed in you, you were so loving, caring, a wonderful father, son, and brother. I love the whole family there are so many memories, when i feel sad i just listen to Michaels music. I hated the way you were treated it wasn't fair. I'm so sorry for all the hurt they caused you. you have so many fans that love you, and forever. You will never be forgotten. I wanted to hold and hug you and take away all the pain you have been though. I will always remember you in my thoughts and my heart, with your beautiful music, those eyes and that beautiful smile of yours, you were the best, You were taken to soon. Love you forever and always will be missed. You have 3 beautiful children that love you and miss you so much. You have such a loving family.
