Two Teens Charged In Connection With City's First Murder Of 2008
Wednesday January 2, 2008
CityNews.ca Staff

Two teens, a 17-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, have been charged with first-degree murder following the city's first homicide of the year.

The victim, a 14-year-old girl, was pronounced dead in hospital Tuesday night after suffering stab wounds to the abdomen.

Police arrested the 17-year-old suspect shortly before 5am at an apartment block on O'Connor Dr. near St. Clair Ave.

It took police some time to find the victim, who had fallen in a snowbank after running part way down a residential street near Northdale Boulevard and Hollinger Road. The 911 call apparently came in just after 6pm from a person identifying themselves as a friend of the girl, but when paramedics went to the address they couldn't locate her.

It was an off-duty cop who found the victim, but at that point it was too late to save her life.

No names have been released, and police haven't said what relationship, if any, the suspects and victim had. The identities of the accused are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

It's the second year in a row the city's first murder has occurred on New Year's Day. Residents of the East York neighbourhood were shocked to hear about the death and the age of the victim, who was reportedly the daughter of two Toronto Police workers.

"She's a lovely girl and beautiful girl, and always walked by here and waved and smiled and even spoke to us," recalled neighbour Nancy Greene.

Another area resident, Elizabeth McFarlane, adds, "I just can't believe it. And what's especially shocking is the age of the girl. I'm in shock."

The suspects were due to make an appearance in court Wednesday.

A Beautiful Soul, A Tragic Loss

Janet And Maya Henderson Apr 02, 2009

I did not personally know Stefanie Rengel. I met her in the pages of The Star at New Years 2008. I am the mother of a beautiful young girl, a child I was once told I could never have, who shows some of the spunk and warmth I feel when I look at these photos of Stefanie. God Bless Stefanie and those left here to mourn a beautiful and loving soul. My heart aches for Stefanie and her family. Seeing her mum now, doing her best to carry on and enjoy her children and live her life; her brother so devastated by the loss of his sister, his friend and mentor;her fathers, and her other mum, all supporting each other, coping in a way the Stefanie herself I'm sure is happy to see. I chose the Dolphin icon because my precious daughter, aged 8&1/2 (the 1/2 is very important, you know) loves marine life, and is still not convinced that mermaids do not exist. We see Stefanie as a beautiful mermaid, ready to appear whenever she is needed. My thoughts are with the extended Rengel and Hung families. Mothers and Fathers, hug your children whenever you can. Hug each other while you're at it! And never let a day end without any angry feelings or conflicts still stirring. Put them in perspective and to rest. You'll feel so much better, calmer and balanced, and you will all thrive on your love and from the joy of loving and being loved. . Sincerely, Janet (aged..."Une femme d"un Certain Age) and Maya(aged 8&1/2). Thank You for reading our tribute to Stefanie and her circle of relatives and friends.

Angel In Heaven

Tina Mar 31, 2009

My wish for you is that with one trial ending & one soon beginning that your family & friends can finally get some closure to this tragedy. Life will go on, but it will never be the same. May you hold some comfort in knowing your Angel from Heaven has returned and doing great & wonderful things there but will always be watching down with a smile.
My heart & prayers

Rest In Peace.

Kendi Mar 25, 2009

For you Stefanie i pray for at night. And i think about when the world spins without you being there. I spoke to and looked into your eyes, who knew that those words would be the last time i would ever talk to you again. I wish i could turn back time and warn you, warn you from what was about to happen. But who knew. Who would have known that the morning after New Years, you would be gone forever.

I truly miss you and you will always be in our memories.
All hopes and prayers goes out to the family and all of her friends.
Rest In Peace.
