Steve Baumgartner Tribute

28-year-old Steve Baumgartner of Iowa was killed while riding a street luge.

Authorities said Baumgartner had come to the area to participate in an unsanctioned race on Sunday. The race was canceled after his death.

Friends said Baumgartner was a Navy petty officer 1st Class and was a weapons specialist on a ship. He was on leave when he was killed, one friend said.

Baumgartner was riding a 5-foot-long luge on wheels down Puckett Road in Rosedale Park when he lost control and hit a tree. He died on impact despite the helmet and protective gear he was wearing. He was with two friends.
