I only just learned of the passing of the Golden Voice of the Great Southwest this week. I know that political activists, labor organizers, storytellers, folk singers and other such assorted rif-raf will join me in mourning his passing.

About

Utah's least favorite son

Utah was a non-compromised, non-compromising anarchist, singer/songwriter who wrote songs in his head rather than on paper for reasons only he could explain.  But he shared them with any that would care to partake in his special gift.  I first saw him as the opening act for David Bromberg and the Fabulous Torpedos (Steve Burgh) at SUNY Stony Brook around 1971.  An archival tape of that show was broadcast on WUSB FM and remains my favorite remembrance of his wit, wisdom and humor.  He was practically ridden out of the state on a rail and spent years as a hobo and his family wishes that donations be made to homeless shelters in his name...a fitting tribute to a man with a heart as big as his golden voice.
