About
Vernon Elvis Presley (by Jeff Schrembs)
Since so much has been written about Vernon Elvis Presley here are some basic facts: Vernon Elvis Presley Born on April 10, 1916 in Fulton, Itawamba County, Mississippi, and died June 26, 1979 in Memphis, Tennessee Son of Jessie D. McClowell Presley and Minnie Mae Hood (aka: Dodger) Married Gladys Love Smith on June 17, 1933 in Pontotoc County, MS (note: Gladys died on August 14, 1958). Vernon was only 17 years old and Gladys was 21.Vernons brother Vester married Gladys sister Clettes. His 2nd marriage was to Davada (Dee) Stanley Children of Vernon and Gladys: Twins; Jesse Garon (stillborn) and Elvis Aron, born on January 8, 1935 Vernon referred to Elvis as "my boy" or "boy" and Elvis always called Vernon "Daddy". Vernon managed Elvis' financial affairs, even though he did not have a high school education, throughout Elvis' career. During Vernons teenage years he was referred to as the "most handsome man around town". Vernon borrowed the money, which he repaid, in order to build the "shotgun home" that Elvis was born in (which is now an Historical Momument). Vernon had a "dry sense of humor" and had a hobby of working on old cars which he continued to do while at Graceland. Vernon often joined Gladys and Elvis, during Elvis' childhood, in singing Gospel Songs in their home - in Church - and on the front porch as they were good "God fearing" people. Vernon moved his young family to Memphis, from Mississippi (Tupelo where Elvis was born), to try to give Elvis a "better life". Even though Elvis' upbringing was "hard" the fact is that Vernon, and Gladys, raised a loving/caring/talented son that would share his talents with the World for several decades and even after these "30+ years" since Elvis' death Elvis continues to have a significant role in American and Worldwide Culture (i.e. music, style, etc.).
