About

All About Vin's life

Vin Thoms grew up in New Jersey. He was the oldest of five siblings. He was a graduate of St. Mary's School in Rutherford. He attended Montclair State College. He then met and married his wife Kathy. They settled in New Jersey and had 3 amazing children Vin, Bob and Sean. Vin worked very long and hard hours as an Electrician in the Union (Electro-ES in West Orange) for 30 years.

It wasn't until he retired that he came to life. Kathy and Vin moved to Hammonton, New Jersey to live out there retirement. While living in Mullica Township, Vin for the first time was able to enjoy his life not worrying about having to punch a clock. He was able to stand up and fight for causes he believed in. He fell right into place working the political spectrum of Mullica Township. He was a master carpenter and mason, and was extremely artistic and creative. He began building furniture in the workshop he always wanted. Vin always talked about how he wanted to see nothing but flowers and trees and for the first time he had enough acres of land to relax and enjoy, he even raised a small farm of chickens. Also, he became very popular with the gardeners of Atlantic County where he became a Master Gardner. Vins life was way to short and ironically just as he was beginning to life live it was taken from him. He will be missed dearly by all.

Vin was survived by his wife Kathy Thoms, three sons: Vin Thoms III and his wife Jill, Bob and his wife Kristan and Sean. Two brothers Gerry Thoms and Brian Thoms and his wife Jeanne. And a sister Patricia Thoms. Two grandchildren Alex and Adam Thoms and many loved nieces and nephews.

Memories

More like a brother than brother-in-law

kathy thoms Feb 26, 2009

The time we spent with you and Kathy were always special. I thank God for those pleasant memories! Chanticleer, our cruise on the Delaware on Lewes Ferry, walking tour of Lewes, walks around Hammonton, trips by train to Atlantic City where we walked the boards, lunched at the Irish Pub, sat on the beach. Meeting at Philly Flower Show, learning how to grow flowers and vegetables in your greenhouse, sharing cuttings, antiquing in Frederick--dear God, you did bring home that iron ball--work of art!
Saving money on food/meals so we could spend more on art! But we didn't skip the ice cream! The campouts, the cookouts, sailing on the river. You have given us a wealth of fond memories. Although the list could go on and on, I particularly appreciate the electrical and drywall work you did to make our house so much more finished!

Thanks for the joys and laughter and your precious smile! God loves you and so do we. I do believe we'll meet again!

Bass River

Robert P Thoms Feb 21, 2009

Uncle Vin and I had our first real conversation at the cabin at Bass River. I was amazed at his point of view and perception of the world and how he related it. It was always good to have long conversations with him after that. I will always miss him. Cousin Bob

Good memories....Thank you....

Dear dad,
As every day goes by I miss you more, however, you are near. I feel your presence, your love and your guidance as I engage in my daily life. You have instilled in me a deep sense of respect for self and respect for others. You also taught me through your actions about how to be honest, hard working, earnest, loyal, and caring, and how very , very important it is to stand by your wife and children and your family and confront all things that are painful or that cause pain. Just like in the book The Road Less Travelled, you taught me to confront the challenges and pain of daily life with courage. Thank you dad.
As the life cycle continues, I find myself being thrust into the role of mediator and referee for my own children. A few times I have felt like you were there as I reflect on what the right choice or next move should be. I find time for Jill and my children and enjoy the simple pleasure of a trip to the park, the beach, and sometimes an impromptu roadtrip, just as you and mom always did for us.
I can vividly remember driving through Chinatown on the 4th after the fireworks, and so many other good trips to New Hope, Allaire, Island Beach State Park etc. I have learned through you what it means to enjoy the outdoors in a spiritual way, similar to the native americans worshiping of their creator. I know you weren't a huge fan of church and organized religion. It's okay, I won't hold it against you. I don't enjoy church either...
My children miss you, but I know that you can hear them when they shout into the sky, "thank you Grandpa Vin". Thank you for assembling their wonderful playset. They love it, and they miss you.
I will see you on the other side,
Love always,
Vin
