About
Our Mother
Our Mother excelled at the noblest of callings: For her occupation, she had a 60-year career as a Mother and truly set the standard of excellence for this most important of professions. Married to Lucas Joseph Walter, their four sons were Lucas, Jr. (1949), Frank (1951), Barry (1954), and Richard (1955). Widowed unexpectedly in 1955—and despite her sorrow—this magnificent 31-year old not only accepted, but with unparalleled determination aggressively embraced, the profession of Mother in shouldering the burden of raising four young boys ranging in age from 10 months to six years.
Her four sons were her primary focus for her entire life. Marrying again on 21 February 1966 to Clarence Pershing Fleck (known as Jim or Buss to most of his family and friends), she found not only an excellent father for her four sons, but a loving relationship that would last almost until the end of her time on earth. Her loving husband of 42 years preceded her in passing by less than two months. (For the tribute to Clarence Pershing Fleck, see http://www.respectance.com/Clarence_Pershing_Fleck)
What a life she had! Not only did Virginia have a wide circle of relatives and friends in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area, but when she and Clarence moved to his native Michigan in 1966, her joy in life and ability to relate to everyone quickly created another wide circle of friends there. In 1981, Virginia and Clarence moved to Oxnard, California, and that same magic in her personality influenced everyone who knew her there.
The years following the death of the father of “her boys” was not an easy one, but provided a challenge worthy of her abilities and commitment to doing everything she could for her sons. Refusing to feel sorry for herself and her situation, she was always determined to not be a burden on anyone. Supporting her sons and herself became a multi-faceted challenge; whether serving food at the school cafeteria, baking bread for sale, or ironing clothes for 50 cents per hour, she willingly did anything necessary to ensure “her boys” had what they needed. Even more important than the material support were the lessons of life she provided to her four sons: a work ethic focused on success, a respect for others no matter their differences, and an overall drive to be the best they could be.
Did she often have it tough? Yes.
Was she always sure where the next dollar was coming from? No.
Did she ever complain? No.
Was she always committed to providing the best for her sons? Absolutely.
Did her sons ever feel they lacked for anything? Absolutely not!
Virginia Mae Wise Walter Fleck was an absolutely wonderful human being! She will always be the example by which “her boys” will live their lives.
Her son Frank passed away in 1971. She is survived by her loving sons Lucas (and wife Tepa) of Helsinki, Finland; Barry (and wife Cheryl) of St. Clair Shores, Michigan; and Richard (and wife Vicki) of Roseville, California.
Occupation: Mother.
Virginia Mae Wise Walter Fleck was the perfect professional.

Spending holidays at the Ursuline house. Grandma’s fried carrots, cinnamon buns, and cookies with Hershey kisses inside.
Grandma chasing us girls through the house acting like she was going to spank us with a spatula (we and grandma laughing).
Grandpa’s airplanes.
Musgo days (everything in the fridge has to be eaten ‘cuz it musgo today!)
Summers in Jackson, going to the creamery, driving around in the golf cart, sitting around the camp fire talking, roasting marshmallows, and laughing.
Family reunions in Jackson.
Grandpa’s shish kabobs.
Fishing with Grandpa.
Grandpa’s hugs.
My grandparents were the best. I love them, and miss them very much.

Aunt Virginia

When Aunt Virginia called to tell me about the "family gathering" that she and Buss were hosting at their camp grounds, I assumed that it would be a rather small gathering of relatives. On the contrary, most of the people there were people I had never met before - - Wonderful people who had become such close friends to Virginia and Buss that in her mind they were truly "family". It still makes me smile to think of what a large "family" they had! People popped in and out of the gathering all day long, greeted by Virginia and Buss's warm hospitality. And no one EVER left hungry... Aunt Virginia made sure of that. Her cinnamon rolls were always a definite hit!
Aunt Virginia enjoyed bowling, game shows, playing cards, and traveling. I believe the top of her list though would include just sitting and talking with family and friends. Her favorite subject? Undoubtedly her "boys". Proud of each and every one of them, Aunt Virginia would paint a picture of her "wonderful boys" for each and every listener. They were undoubtedly the light of her life.
Virginia's family continues to be in our thoughts and prayers. It was certainly a privilege to know their loving mother.
Blessings~
