I went to St. Andrews/Manchester Medical school with Wally (as he was know). After we finished our internship at Royal Preston Hospital, I emmigrated to America and Wally joined me for my first month there as part of extended vacation for him prior to starting a SHO position in medicine. I have so very very many memories of times we spent together that I cannot distill them into a single sentence or paragraph. He was for a few years my best and closest friend.
Walter and I started medical school together, so I knew him for 30 years. Coming from the close-knit community of St. Andrews Medical School in Scotland, there was an unspoken bond between all of us - we were all friends, and it feels like we have lost a dear and close relative. Subsequently working in the same area as both of them, I have continued to cross paths with them over the years, and I know that many of us are totally devastated by their deaths. They were good people taken too early. I am pleased to feel that they were friends, and I remember Kathy's pain when she explained to me that her (then) unborn child had a serious heart defect. But by the saddest of circumstances, he remains whereas Walter and Kathy have gone ahead. It was a privilege to know them both.
