About

Brother Walt

Walter's family was the pride and joy of his life. Walter was a loving husband of Jennifer and proud and dedicated father of his two children, Wyatt and Josie.
Walter's personality was larger than life. He's was a man's man who had a tough guy personality on the outside, and a big-hearted, warm and sincere personality on the inside.  For those who got to know him, Walter was someone who you instantly liked and wanted to be around. He loved to make his friends and family laugh, and he was ever the quick witted comedian and observer of life.
Walter was also a very proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local #3 in NYC.  He worked as an electrician for for the IBEW for 26 years. Many of his best friends in life were made while on the job.     Walter was a talented master electrician and a rising star in local 3.  He was especially proud of his recent appointment to shop steward and his important work with both the Allied Club and Catholic Council.
Walter was an avid hunter, fisherman, and motorcycle enthusiast. He loved being outdoors with his friends, and he greatly enjoyed numerous deep-sea fishing trips and both duck and deer-hunting excursions. He also loved riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, and driving around in his new Chevy pickup truck.
Walter's proudest moments in life were the day he married his wife Jennifer and when his two children, Wyatt and Josie were born.
Walter's life ended suddenly when his motorcycle was struck by a car.  As far as we know, he died instantly and did not suffer.  He was doing something he loved at the time...riding his motorcycle.
Walter took an active role in raising his children to be both good Catholics and to appreciate the values and doctrines of the Catholic Church.  Walter and his family attended mass weekly.  Both his children are currently enrolled in catholic school.  His son Wyatt made his first communion on May 10th. Both his children are excellent students and love to read.
If Walter could have spoken at his services in May, I think he would have been both overwhelmed and honored by the outpouring of love and support from his family and many friends.  He would have thanked each one of your individually, and he would have also shared his love and admiration for you!
While Walter is no longer here with us, we can all take at least some comfort in knowing that his memory will live in our hearts and minds forever.  We were all honored and privileged to have known him, even if only for a short time.
Walter's family would again like to thank everyone for their tremendous outpouring of love, support, and generosity.
As we all continue to grieve and remember Walter's great life, please feel free to add a photo, a favorite memory, a good deed, a story, a random act of kindness, or perhaps a funny moment that you shared with Walter. We hope that this collection of photos and memories will become something amazing for all of us to cherish for many years to come!

Memories

Martinique 1987

Michele May 04, 2009

In 1987, my friend Cathy and I went to Club Med in Martinique. While walking around the grounds of the club, I had something to mail and asked a guy in passing if he knew where a mailbox was. With his tall stature and in a black shirt with teal-colored skeletons on it, the guy pointed to the nearest mailbox with long fingers and in a deep voice said, “Ovah theah” in his Long Island accent. Being from Bayonne New Jersey, I was familiar with that accent and I asked him where he was from. Well, not only did I learn he was from Massapequa, I soon learned that he was a Local 3 electrician, he played the harmonica, he had a voice like Rodney Dangerfield and an amusing personality to match. Before we all knew it, he had the whole place in stitches making up blues songs off the cuff on his harmonica and telling entertaining tales. For the next three years I would keep in touch with him. I’d call him and say, “make me laugh”. And laugh I did….
That was 22 years ago, but Martinique in 1987 was a place and time not to be forgotten and neither was a tall guy with a harmonica in his shirt pocket from Long Island named Walter Cannon.

Strange but True Story

Gary Birke Dec 24, 2008

I was very close friends with Walter from 2nd grade until sometime in High School. Early on in our friendship, I remember his Mom, (in a Plymouth Duster), and my Mom taking turns taking us from swimming lessons at Marjorie Post. We very good friends for quite a long time. I had no prior knowledge of his accident and hadn't seen or heard anything about Walter since High School days.
Early this Summer, out of nowhere I had a dream that there was an accident Walter died. The dream was really bugging me so I thought I'd look up his name on Google and see if there was any information on my old buddy. It was then that I found out he was killed in the accident about a month before. When I read about his accident, it hit me pretty hard. I had always hoped to bump into Walter again and now know this will never happen. I read about his family, and how tragic this is. As if that dream out of nowhere was not enough I read his wifes name was Jennifer and he had a boy 7 and a girl 5. His family mirrored mine. My wifes name is Jennifer and my boy is 7 and my girl is 5. It really makes you think about things. I am glad to see these postings in his memory, and I hope his family can stay strong.

My Memory

Denise Nov 07, 2008

I will always remember Walter telling me stories about Josie and Wyatt with a grin on his face from ear to ear. Every time we were at a function he always asked me to make sure I talked to Jen so that she wouldn't be bored. Of course we tried but with 5 kids between us it was always fly by conversations. He really loved his family. He ran the Allied fishing trip for years and always asked me to do the pool. The year my husband became President of the club I had confronted him to do the pool like I did for years, and he said no way am I going to let the first lady do it! And sure enough he made someone else do it. I really did miss him on this years fishing trip. He is certainly be missed by all who knew him.

LuLu's girly clothing shop

Cousin Shaye Oct 07, 2008

Cousin Jen would always send cousin Walter to pick up my birthday and Christmas gifts. I would always recieve gift cards from my favorite stores. When I opened my Christmas card, there was a Lulu's gift certificate. (Lulu's only has young pretty girls working there, with their heads up high- its a high end boutique) When I ran over to thank cousin Walter, he explained to me that when he walked in the store, every girl working there stared at him and ran behind the register with the phone in their hands ready to dial 911. He put his hands up and said, "It's ok, I'm just picking up a gift for my cousin." I know for a fact that when he left that store, he had all the pretty female store employees laughing and feeling foolish for judging my "tough guy" cousin. After all, he has only touched a couple thousand lives. I miss you so much cousin Walter!
Love, Cousin Shaye
