Big Bear

Linda CIrella Aug 21, 2008

When Walter stood next to my 4'11" mother he seemed like BIg Foot engulfing an elf. She would disappear! Of course, he was a gentle bear and it didn't take long to figure that out.

FOR MOM: At one time, a man that tall and big, with tatoos and a huge beard might have frightened this petite woman to cross the street rather than meet his gaze. (Small children were always shy and hid away at first.) But Angela adored Walter. It was for him that she would, after making 3 other desserts to please her own children, make that extra lemon pie "just for Walter." I am sure she greeted him with one of those pies at the Pearly Gates.

FOR ME: At all our crowded family functions, Walter never failed to find me and kiss me hello. We lived in different worlds but at Debbie and Eddie's or Walter and Veronica's or in his own warm and loving home, we were on a level playing field called family. And that mattered most to him. He treated me with respect and affection.

We miss him. All of us.
