Nine-year-old Zane Newton crawled into a drainage ditch in an empty lot and the hole collapsed, burying the boy in dirt and killing him.
It was originally reported that Newton had been shot and abducted by an unknown perpetrator. An Amber Alert had been issued for California and Nevada. Police had been searching for a masked man in a Honda-type vehicle.
