Born near Le Claire, Iowa, Buffalo Bill earned his nickname providing workers of the Kansas Pacific Railroad with bison meat. He lived a remarkable life as one of the most memorable figures from the "Wild West". Though he will most likely be remembered in the collective conscientiousness as a wild western cowboy and for his performing troupe, we should memorialize some of his more relevant impacts on society. He pushed for more rights for Native Americans and women, and employed many Native Americans in his traveling troupe with generous pay. He referred to them as the "former foe, present friend, the American" and fought for better treatment for them. He also was a pioneer of conservationism, deriding hunting bison for their hides and pushed for a designated hunting season to save their numbers.
