Prepaying your funeral

Tia Marie Nov 06, 2007

I figured this would be a good as place as any to talk about this subject. Something I know that is on the rise are "Preneed services". I've heard about prepaying one's funeral but there really isn't a great deal of talk. Obviously one has to rate the pros vs the cons. A lot of the advantages of prepaying a funeral are: * You may choose the type of funeral service you desire. * You will save your survivors from making choices during the stress of bereavement. * You can do comparison shopping at available mortuaries. However what are the disadvantages? I can think of one of the obvious disadvantages being if the funeral home that you have prepaid your services to could go out of business potentially leaving you with nothing for your funeral. What about inflation? Does any of the directors here have any more information about this? What do you think about prepaid funeral services?

Tia, I believe that inflation is included in the pre-pay price. Funeral directors figure in inflation on caskets and burial vaults.

Oh thanks! Is there anything else you can tell me about Pre-need services?

hi, let me share as well. in a preneed the money put toward the contract, is in most cases, put into a trust, and it gains intrest in the trust. the price is frozen (once the full contract is paid). when the time comes the money can be acessed with a certified death certificate, and the intrest that is aculmated will go to the funeral home to pay for any thing that has gone up in price, as things do.. still nothing will be do the family, if the preneed is paid in full. with the fast rising in cost of everything, by paying now, your family will not be out the extreem cost of things in the future. any funeral home would be glad to explain the process. and shop around, each funeral home sets their own cost..... kim
