I know I know. Everyone else's grandma has a special casserole or a great family dessert. We're Japanese, what can I say? This is my grandma's Chow Mein recipe.
SAUCE INGREDIENTS:
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon ginger
2 tablespoons hoisin sauce or oyster sauce
1 teaspoon vegetable oil or sesame oil
1 teaspoon red chili flakes
Handful of fresh basil chopped
1/2 cup water
Sesame seeds to taste
NOODLE & VEGGIE INGREDIENTS:
1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into thin strips
1 cup thinly sliced diagonally cut celery sections
3 large green onions chopped into ½ inch pieces
1 can of water chestnuts drained and chopped into ½ inch pieces
2 cups fresh snow peas
1 package (4 ounces) yellow Chinese long life noodles (you can use any instant noodle recipe if you don’t have this brand)
++++++++++++++++++++++
PREPARATION:
1. Heat 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil or sesame oil in wok or large nonstick skillet over
medium-high heat.
2. Add garlic, ginger, chili flakes and basil and stir for about a min.
3. Add chicken, water chestnuts, celery and green onions. Cook chicken until brown.
4. Reduce heat to medium. Add1/2 cup water, hoisin or oyster sauce, green onions, snow
peas and the package of noodles and cover with a lid for 3-4 min.
5. Uncover and add the rest of the sesame oil. Turn heat up to high, toss for 2 more min with
sesame seeds and serve.
