About

Moolah

Mary Lillian Ellison, whose flying drop kicks, flying head scissors and hair-pulling "flying mare" body slams brought her renown in professional wrestling as "the Fabulous Moolah," died Friday in Lexington, S.C., near her home in Columbia. She was 84.

She died at a hospital after shoulder replacement surgery and might have had a heart attack or a blood clot, said her daughter, Maryetta Austin.

For more than half a century, as a wrestler, promoter and trainer, the Fabulous Moolah was a leading figure on the women's circuit. She held versions of the women's wrestling championship for all but short intervals from the mid-1950s to the mid-1980s. World Wrestling Entertainment brought her back at age 76. Clad in a sequined jacket over a green leotard, she pinned her opponent, Ivory, in a match in Cleveland and was again proclaimed the champion.

The Fabulous Moolah enjoyed the mayhem, but she especially coveted the money.

My Memory

Trish Vecchio Mar 01, 2009

Though I was far too young to remember this great lady I have been told many times stories of her. My parents became friends with her, how I am unsure, but I do know that they knew the lady well. All I have ever heard of her was nothing but good or in self defense as she seemed to have at least one abusive marriage. I was also told by my parents that she got even with the man too. Good fo her! No lady should EVER have to endure such things. I may not have known her (as to remember her) but, I feel I have endured a great loss since her death. She will always be remembered by me as a kind-hearted, generous and caring lady and will be sorely missed. Here's to you and all you did in your life Ms. Ellison!!!

blessings...

My Memory

What a performer! I remember watching WWF with my grandpa who had competed in amateur sumo. He didn't speak a word of English and actually thought it was real. The Fabulous Moolah would elicit boos. I always thought it was so funny.
