Death 2.0

  • from Burningbird

  • Well, grief can be expressed in many ways. Obviously this is more like a geographically distributed wake than the private grieving you're talking about. I still think it can be appropriate for significant numbers of people today, and as network mediated communities start to eclipse geographically-bounded ones, I think that number will only grow. Respect, Acceptance and Celebration

  • from Mama's Musings

  • We don't like to talk about it. We ignore it, deny it, run from it like the plague. Only we can't. We're born with its certainty etched into our DNA. We're so terrified about death that we even make up names for it: Grim Reaper, The Pearly Gates, Passing On, to name a few. (more)

Ras le bol des réseaux sociaux ?

  • from id-blog
  • added Jul 17, 2007
(more)

There's no escaping social networks, even if you'r

  • by Ivor Tossell
  • from The Globe and Mail
  • added Jul 13, 2007
  • Respectance.com marks the latest attempt to create a workable website for online memorials. The goal is to create a site where people can post online tributes to the departed; the Respectance twist is to add Facebook-style features to the effort. Some of these are genuinely useful: For instance, given its owner's blessing, anyone can upload photos to a Respectance tribute page. And it must be said that the site is a fair sight classier than many of its overwrought predecessors. (more)

Vertical social networks

  • from r.b. trends
  • added Jul 10, 2007
  • “Respectance is a social networking site for online tributes, or as the email sent to me so nicely put it: MySpace for dead people. Respectance provides a space for family and friends to honor their dead loved ones by creating online tributes. Whilst similar tribute profiles do appear on MySpace or Facebook, Respectance differs by being dedicated entirely to the dead.” (more)

On Death, Social Networks, and Johnny Cash on Face

  • from Swarming Media
  • added Jul 09, 2007
  • I was intrigued when I saw TechCrunch's post about Respectance, which is a well designed online memorial site billed as a social network for the deceased. In some aspects it resembles a very slick version of FindAGrave - which allows visitors to leave virtual flowers at the gravestone and personalized notes - but it also seems to imply a presentness usually reserved for the living or the living online spaces of the deceased (a MySpace page for an expired teen, for example).
