ראשית, ראוי לציין כי פוטנוט הוא, מן הסתם, לא באמת רשת חברתית - הרי אפילו האינטרנט לא מאפשר לנו לתקשר עם המתים - אלא אתר לדפים אישיים. אתר דומה, respectance.com, כבר עלה ברשת לפני כשנה. עם זאת, הצצה בגוגל טרנדס מראה שהפופולריות של פוטנוט עולה, מה שמצביע על כך שפוטנוט עונה טוב יותר על צורכי הגולשים.
