About

Memorial Picnic Details

My Dad passed away on March 25, 2009. As you may or may not know, he was sick for the past 3 years with: Congestive Heart Failure, COPD, Emphysema, Diabetes and most recently diagnosed with Lung Cancer in the days before he passed.

He went peacefully - high as a kite on morphine and if you knew him, that would have been the way he wanted to go. The last 3 years were a struggle but also a gift and I know that not only are we at peace, but he is too.

I got to spend a lot of quality time with him, especially in the past few years. He got to see me get married, get pregnant, and he got to know his granddaughter. I'm eternally thankful for all those things.

Per my Dad's wishes we won't be having calling hours or a formal funeral. Instead, we're going to do a picnic at 12 PM at the Holt Rd. Lodge in Webster Park on April 18, 2009 - the weekend before what would have been his 59th birthday. Please come casual and ready to have fun!

If you have a particular memory of my Dad, please bring it with you to the picnic or post it on this site. I'm going to be creating a storybook for his granddaughter Lily to help her always know who he was. PS - Please don't feel like you have to censor the memories. Dad was never a fan of censorship, we'll have a special section for Lily for when she's older :)

Memories

Xerox Daze

Anne Giordano Apr 10, 2009

Tried this before, and it didn't take--will try again. I met Sam when I was new to the "foreman" position--the first woman to attempt it. In my forties, Sam in his twenties--what a pair. He tried in his outrageous way to intimidate me, but soon found out I was not the shrinking violet type, or easily shocked either at his pot smoking and salty language. Once we got over the original nonsense, we had some interesting conversations. Some people may have been fooled by him, I think he cared a lot about what people thought--anyway I enjoyed his company and sensed that beneath that gruff wise-guy exterior beat a lovely heart. Sorry his time among us was short.

the best rat pucker

Ronald Palermo Apr 09, 2009

Sam could puck a rat at the sterling fair with pretty good accuracy, especially when I was the target! A lover of pink Floyd and those funky video laser discs that were invented in the early 80's. Working together at the big "X", every day was a party. That first break outdoor "get together" always was an eye opener. If the weather was bad, those "crane" rides did the trick. Way too much fun for what was suppose to be a "job". He didn't have a green thumb. He refused to water the spider plant on his window sill and everyday I'd complain about it. I took it home and its still growing like a weed!!!!

Sweetness

Douglas Kondziolka Apr 08, 2009

As gruff as Sam "Skully" might have seemed when I first met him at the Sterling festival years-and-years ago, he was the sweetest man I had ever met. Kind, thoughtful and totally loyal as a friend. I enjoyed his "Dog Roasts", his insights, climbing the mountain with him, and the many conversations we held.

Sweet voyage, my friend.
