Karl was incredibly kind, generous, intelligent and creative. He also had a great sense of humour! My sister, Ellie, had recently got her driving licence and Karl was doing a fantastic job navigating us to a music event in an unfamiliar part of town. We got to a set of lights and Karl said "Turn right here"...which she did...but into the path of an oncoming vehicle. We just made it through! As we pulled over to the side of the road to recover from the shock, Karl calmly said (with his characteristic dry humour) "What I meant to say was turn right after you had checked to see whether there were any cars coming!"
