I loved Bernard as a teacher and generous friend. Firstly as my professor in that first year of Fine arts 1967 when he introduced me to Clement Greenberg with the result that I went to America. Later as a champion of my kind of art involving human history and events. Bernard was always there as a mentor and guide. I will miss him greatly but all the things he has taught me will remain until my own end. I write this from Afghanistan and although a long way away I feel Bernard's strong spirit and enquiring mind . OZ had lost its greatest art historian but it is still there in his writings. The Formalesque lives on. God bless you Bernard, George Gittoes
