Although I did not get to spend much time with Papa he has defiantly had a profound influence in my life. It was him that first sparked my interest in the plant world, I have fond memories of his visits to Perth and going for morning walks to the shops as a very young boy, he taught me all the names of the flowers and plants in people’s gardens, I remember it like yesterday. Then there was the time when he showed us how putting a drowned fly in salt would bring it back to life, there is always a question mark in my mind as to if it really did work, you see the fly was always gone when we checked the salt so we never saw it actually come back to life, Papa would say the fly must of flown away. Papa always had an opinion on the issue at hand and could back it up with well thought out reasons that often would sway my thoughts. Most of all though I will always remember Papa’s kindness, his great wisdom and the fact that for me he was the cornerstone of the McAvoy morals which live on through us Mac's. Big respect for the man that was. Ben McAvoy
