As a Ph.D. student in the late 60s and early 70s I lived in awe of David Caro. He had written to me inviting me to come to Melbourne with confident expectation of scholarship support. I had later approached him about switching to the bubble chamber group and he had been most considerate and encouraging whilst ensuring I stayed with the Cyclotron. I was delighted when he came to me with a DECtape with a deleted file on it. We both knew that the file was still there - just marked for deletion. It took me a few days to figure out how to rewrite the directory block to reverse the deletion. The gleam in his eyes and the smile of happiness when I presented the recovered file were worth every hour I spent.
