I met Doug in August 1969 when I started work at Ok Tedi -which Doug had a hugh hand in discovering- and worked with him over the 2 years that I was there. He took Ok Tedi from a early discovered copper prospect to a very large copper/gold mine , well done Douge, and Im very sad to learn of your death, REST IN PEACE, and my thoughts to all your family.

Doug the larrikin, and instigator of the CRAE "Blue Duck" Award. He himself deserved this award - if only for his adventures at the Parmelia (Perth) when he found himself locked out of his hotel room in the corridor - in his birthday suit! Doug the "fish", who lived up to this nickname on many a friday night at the Palace bar (Kalgoorlie). He set a cracking pace! Doug the exploration geologist, with Ok Tedi under his belt, & a crucial member of the CRAE team. Doug the gentle mentor, who skillfully guided so many young geo.s (and older hands such as myself) through their careers. Doug, the man, who enjoyed life to the full and shared his happiness with all those he met. To Doug my thanks. It has truly been a privilege to have known you. You will be missed but not forgotten. Vale!

Doug was an important part of CRAE's DNA. He cared for people, he mentored people, he had a huge capacity for fun, and an equal capacity for the amber fluid. The legendary 'Blue Duck Award' was all Doug - imaginative, humerous and hugely bonding. We never thought to lose you so early Doug and will miss you sorely. You can be justly proud of what you achieved with people and even more proud if you can hear what they thought of you. A true mate in the Hughes tradition!

Many, many memories ,happy and humorous. Interviewing him for a job with CRAE at 140 Bourke Street in about 1977, and also Rosco Kennedy the same day. A lively pair. Sharing his musical skills at the player piano at home in Kalgoorlie. Sharing his interest in training young geos at many induction camps. Such a people person, he was one of very few who got close to the late great Frank Hughes, shown by his eulogy at Frank's funeral. I'll cherish his enthusiasm, energy, openness, sense of humour, a great mate to all who came into his orbit. Doug of the NMI (no middle initial)! An in joke we shared. Farewell and travel well, old pal.
