Throughout his term as Chancellor of the UNE, Dr and Mrs Pat Roberston-Cuninghame contributed to the UNE College system by their participation as official guests at major dinners and special events organised by the respective Colleges. The Chancellor often spoke of the UNE collegiate experience as one of UNE’s unique and enduring strengths. Dr Roberston-Cuninghame was an Honorary Life Member of the Robb College Senior Common Room. When the Robb College Foundation was launched in 1988, Dr Roberston-Cuninghame made a generous donation and became a Life Member, endorsing Robb College’s intention to ensure an ongoing and independent source of financial support to the College. Rob and Pat were ardent supporters of the inaugural Robb College Art Exhibition in 1988, and supported this event each year thereafter during Dr Robertson-Cuninghame’s term as Chancellor. They enthusiastically contributed to the ‘World’s Largest Painting’ completed on May 8th, 1990, with the assistance of UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and Australian artist, Ken Done, to raise funds for UNICEF’s Robert Nestdale Memorial Appeal to support UNICEF’s ongoing work in Malawi. In the spring of 1991, a group of six senior Bhutanese educators visited the UNE. Their task was to negotiate a ‘mixed mode’ graduate studies M.Ed. and Ed.D. link between the Royal Government of Bhutan and the UNE Faculty of Education, and a teacher attachment training programme for isolated Bhutanese teachers to gain experience in selected New England primary and small schools. After learning of this important potential international link, Dr Robertson-Cuninghame made available the use of his family’s holiday cottage overlooking Main Beach at Yamba. For the visiting senior Bhutanese educators, this kind gesture capped off a very successful week at the UNE, and, for three of the visitors, provided a first ever encounter with the Pacific Ocean. The hospitality shown by the Chancellor, UNE faculty members and senior officers, and by various New England school communities has provided opportunities for many Bhutanese educators to gain valuable field experience and post-graduate qualifications within a framework that did not deprive Bhutan of key senior officers for extended periods. Twenty years on, the ‘UNE-Bhutan link’ continues. Jim Irvine PhD Master: Robb College, 1981-1990
