Memories from Trevor Johnson, Frank's younger brother: Frank was born in a country hamlet of Ashampsted Common to his mother, Minnie Appleyard Smith, and father, Leonard Yates Johnson, who was in stationed in France during World War I. Frank grew up in Norley, Cheshire, England and moved to Ludlow, Salop in 1930. He attended Ludlow Grammar School and remembered his favourite teacher, Frankie Reeves, who was his History teacher. Less fond memories were often relayed about his Latin teacher, Mr. Sparshot, who actually had the nerve to tell Frank, "You're wrong!" Nevertheless, he won a scholarship to Oxford University to study Law. He graduated but immediately joined the army and rose to the rank of Major. He served at Mountbatten's headquarters in the Far East. He met Margaret Moffitt, the love of his life, while playing tennis in Ludlow, where Margaret had been evacuated to at the start of World War II. They married early in the 40s and had two children, Paul and Michael. After the war, Frank worked in a tax office in England and got fed up with the weather. He turned down the idea of following his brother Trevor to Canada (where it was too damn cold) and emigrated with wife and family (kicking and screaming) to a far-off country down under while leaving a good job and having no immediate prospects! Australia was the destination! He first worked for a saw mill and did assorted other short-term jobs before discovering his final niche at universities. He ended up serving as Comptroller at Monash University in Melbourne before it even broke ground and was instrumental in getting it built. He retired in the 80s and moved with Margaret to Port Arlington where they enjoyed many years of R & R. He enjoyed visits to and from friends and family from far and wide. He visited Canada frequently where he got into the usual antics with his brother Trevor, much to Margaret's and Pat's (Trevor's wife) chagrin! Trevor continued to make the annual trek to Australia from Canada - most recently in the fall of 2010 when he "got Frank out of the house" once more. Well done Frank ... great and long fulfilling life!
