So many times, when i think of my happiest times at Caufield High, Don Carberry's English lessons come to mind. Sitting in a portable listening to him read Chaucer in the old English, the sound of his voice just filled the room with rhythm and beauty. He unlocked the magic of T.S.Eliot and English literature for me. He was a man of dignity and mischief, and I will always feel privileged for the chance to have been taught by him.

I had the privilege of being taught by this great guy whilst a student at Caulfield High School way back in the 1960's. Don was way ahead of his time. Modern in his thinking, and he even let us call him by his first name, a big "no no" at schools back then. He had compassion, and went out of his way to assist any student with their problems. His commitment and professionalism as a teacher could not be faulted. But above all, he was just simply a decent human being. Many students of the period all those years ago have Don to thank in some way for where they are today. I know I do. Don is in a better place now, probably marking the exam papers up there already. Sincere sympathy to Joy and the family.
