After 27 years with the ABC, as its popular Chief Television Newsreader James retired on 10 June 1983. The next day he commenced his work with the Peer Support Program. James served as Chairman of the Peer Support Foundation for 17 years, then continued to sit on the Board until October 2008 when sadly his deteriorating health made it difficult for him to attend Board meetings. Jim's contribution to Peer Support Australia continues to be valued by everyone of us who have known him. I personally have known James for over 10 years and I remember him as the Foundation’s “computer expert”. He designed and developed our first website and was the port of call for all computer problems. I remember watching him at around 80 years of age texting on his mobile phone and was blown away with how a man of his advanced years embraced technology. He often told a story about the first time he bought a DVD player. He imported from the US and paid something like $16,000 for it. We all laughed at how times have changed. I saw James last week and was privileged to have had the opportunity to say goodbye. James was one of life’s gentlemen and will be remembered fondly and missed by all. The Measure of a Man Not ‘How did he die?’ but ‘How did he live?’ Not ‘What did he gain?’ but ‘What did he give?’ These are the units of a man, as a man, To measure the worth, regardless of birth. Not ‘What was his station?’ but ‘Had he a heart?’ And ‘How did he play his own special part?’ ‘Was he ever ready, with a word of good cheer To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?’ Not ‘ What was his church? Nor ‘What was his creed?’ But ‘Had he defended those really in need?’ Not ‘What did the sketch in the newspaper say?’ But “How many were sorry when he passed away?’ Sharon Austin General Manager, Peer Support Australia
