What a great Senator Jesse Helms was. To have never lost a political race is quite an accomplishment. I hope those who have opposed him realize that those who voted him into office are walking along side you even now and are continuing to vote for the values Senator Helms upheld. Knowing this state put him into Senate for as long as they did is only one of the many reasons I am proud to be from North Carolina. If you saw him in a negative light I implore you to look beyond secondhand information and read first hand his voting record (which is public information for those of us who like to make up our own mind about things rather than having our opinions handed to us by a third party). He believed every person was created equal in the eyes of God and voted to protect each one of this states citizens, even those who hated him. As for moral issues, if you disagreed with Jesse Helms and oh so many other more conservative thinkers please don’t take it out on us because sadly we can’t take credit for the ideals we try to uphold but rather look to God and the Bible from which the nation was knitted together. That is definitely who your disagreement is with.

I WAS PROUD THAT JESSE HELMS REPRESENTED NORTH CAROLINA AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. WE WERE FORTUNATE TO HAVE HIM, HE ALWAYS SAID WHAT HE THOUGHT AND NEVER WAVERED. WHEN JIM HUNT RAN AGAINST HIM, I BECAME OFFICIALLY WHAT I HAD ALWAYS BEEN -- A REPUBLICAN! REST IN PEACE, JESSE...........................

This man was acknowledged and voted the most friendly, curteous member of Congress consistantly. Why, because he was just that. Of course detractors try to make it wrong for him to stand up to those who viciously attacked, placed blocks in legislation he advocated. For them it was being cruel for him to use the same tactics to block thier efforts. Liberals all have the same tac, they will say and do anything to make the USA just like Bangladesh. Read their icon Dr. Rawls. Senetor Helms was stalwart, brave, and bold in opposition to that sort of character. He alone stood up to the UN and got that lame outfit to somewhat be improved. Only a Helms could and would do that, others jjust lay back and let someone else do the heavy lifting. Senator Helms was tuned into the people he represented, and he represented all regardless of race, political persuasion, whatever. if you had a legitimate problem, Helms came to your aid. The Democrats of Charlotte having difficulty with the status with Germans exhaused their impotent and in power fellow democrats, and a last hour appealed to Jesse who helped the airport and NC. It was a legitimate difficulty. Sen. Helms always replied to letters, calls. I found him uplifting, and am proud to call him friend, and my advocate in congress. He will be missed by me and those like me to our own graves. Few men earn the respect Jesse Helms has earned. His detractors can go on and continue to criticize him, and in doing so they admit he was by far the better man. God Bless Jesse and take him into your arms. Nobody deserves it more.

I admire Sen. Helms for standing up to the politically correct, anti-life, anti-family people in this country. He stood by his principles, and he knew he would have to answer to God for whatever actions he took, especially on behalf of the USA in his capacity as senator. God will judge him; we do not need hate-mongers to spew their venom in a column that is supposed to honor his memory. There are plenty of other hate websites for that purpose.May his soul rest in peace and my his good deeds stand him in good stead. God almighty is all-merciful, unlike so many in our country today. There is no forgiveness among those who would change the definition of marriage as God intended, as society has honored for millenia, among those who believe their pleasure and their bodies have no boundaries. The ME-FIRST generation will reap what it has sown.

I have never met Senator Helms but know his daughter in law, Kathleen from college. I can only judge the heart of a man who adopted his son, Charles, Kathleen's husband and have the utmost respect for him. May God welcome him with open arms into his forever family. As a native born Tarheel I have lived here all my life and in my opinion there has never been a government representavive from our state that had as much positive influence in politics as he did. I truly hope that one day we will have others who have the courage to vote old time morals and Biblical principles as he did. My heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends.

Jesse Helms, exemplar of conservatism: As an aide to the 1950 Senate campaign of North Carolina Republican candidate Willis Smith, Helms reportedly helped create attack ads against Smith's opponent, including one which read: "White people, wake up before it is too late. Do you want Negroes working beside you, your wife and your daughters, in your mills and factories? Frank Graham favors mingling of the races." Another ad featured photographs Helms himself had doctored to illustrate the allegation that Graham's wife had danced with a black man. (The News and Observer, 8/26/01; The New Republic, 6/19/95; The Observer, 5/5/96; Hard Right: The Rise of Jesse Helms, by Ernest B. Furgurson, Norton, 1986) The University of North Carolina was "the University of Negroes and Communists." (Capital Times, 11/22/94) Black civil rights activists were "Communists and sex perverts." (Copley News Service, 8/23/01) Of civil rights protests Helms wrote, "The Negro cannot count forever on the kind of restraint that's thus far left him free to clog the streets, disrupt traffic, and interfere with other men's rights." (WRAL-TV commentary, 1963) He also wrote, "Crime rates and irresponsibility among Negroes are a fact of life which must be faced." (New York Times, 2/8/81) Over the years Helms has declared homosexuality "degenerate," and homosexuals "weak, morally sick wretches." (Newsweek, 12/5/94) In a tirade highlighting his routine opposition to AIDS research funding, Helms lashed out at the Kennedy-Hatch AIDS bill in 1988: "There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy." (States News Service, 5/17/88) And the man ABC News now describes as a "conservative icon" (8/22/01) in 1993 sang "Dixie" in an elevator to Carol Moseley-Braun, the first African-American woman elected to the Senate, bragging, "I'm going to make her cry. I'm going to sing Dixie until she cries." (Chicago Sun-Times, 8/5/93) Jesse Helms was a hateful bigot who ruined many people's lives, appealed to the worst impulses of humanity, and left the world a worse place for his having been in it. Stop pretending the hateful stuff doesn't matter. It matters. It harmed America.

I am an honest, highly educated, hard-working professional, decorated Vietnam veteran, Christian and true American Patriot. I had the untimely misfortune to work as a very dedicated North Carolina state government employee many years during the terrible reign of James B. Hunt - the 4 term political machine Democrat who brought literal evil and tyranny to the State Employees Personnel System. Jim Hunt and his Hollywood bag men and faggot loving supporters took the State of North Carolina out of God's care and put it in the hands of Satan and his demons. It is still there today. So THANK YOU from God fearing and law abiding Patriots who love thier country and families more than the lifestyle of queers and dykes that claim beaureaucratic power and control today within the state government departments in North Carolina. Jim Hunt set in motion the most left-wing liberal socialist anti-God government machine east of California, Oregon and Washington and south of Washington, D.C. Jim Hunt, his supporters and his hand-picked government descendents can worship thier God Satan and thier extrme liberal causes if they want. But I will look forward to meeting you Jesse in Heaven where we can finally live righteously according to God's commandments in peace, harmony and honor with our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ. Thanks Senator "No" for the over-whelming defeat you gave the most corrupt and immoral governor in the history of North Carolina. We never have to deal with Jimmie Boy as a Senator thanks to the large Democrat majority of voters who knew the real Jess Helms. They wrote off the false Jesse Helms image portrayed by the Hollywood set and the socialist communists controlling the written media today! May God Bless Your Memory and may it live long beside that of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams who share the date of your honorable death. And as you often stated in closing your campaign speeches at grass roots meetings, "Fello citizens, you have a Republic if you can keep it!" May God Bss america! Amen

If I remember correctly, he won elections with a very small majority of votes. . As a North Carolinian I'm PROUD to say that I NEVER voted for this man!!

People are trying to relate real American patriots to Jesse Helms.... the fact that he died on the 4th of July wasn't soon enough. This man did more to stifle American government than any enemy, he was not an American patriot and it's an insult to Jefferson and others to put Jesse Helms in the same class. I pray that his soul rots in hell and that God shows no mercy to this terrible man who hatedful.

Senator Helms was a true patriot, a man whose independence of spirit and love for our Nation will always be held by we who knew him best as a true thing of beauty. He struck a nerve in the hearts of his villifiers. They weren't going to make Jesse to be a liberal so they hated him all the more. But in 1972, 1978, 1984,1990 and 1996, the people of North Carolina, who knew him best, gave him their renewed confidence in keeping him in the United States Senate. Despite all the bad words describing him. His place in American history is secure and it is high. Sorry, guys. Take up your grievances with the people who kept returning him to the United States Senate. The people's verdict will always hold sway in this country. Rock on, Senator Helms. Rest in peace, dear friend.

How refreshingly ironic that a man so dedicated to denying freedom and liberties to many Americans would die on the day we celebrate our freedom and liberties as a nation. Jesse Helms WAS NOT a patriot or fine American. He was a hate-filled bigot and his death on the 4th of July shows that God does indeed have a sense of humor. I hope and pray that Jesse Helms burns in hell forever and a day!

I hope God knows you better than most of us. I hope He knows the man you really are. Not the kind of man we've seen over so many years, a racist, a homophobe (misspelling), etc. Although your love of country, and the deeds you've done for "your" people will leave sweet memories in the minds of your supporters such that you will be hailed a hero. But to many, many others--those of us still living and those precious souls you will see in the hereafter--to us, you are an evil man. But it is God who knows you best. So I pray that you are not the man "we" think we know, but someone much more beautiful in the eyes of God.

A man who kept racism alive in NC espically with WRAL editorals using the N Word like it was his first language. He frequently used racial fear tactics to win elections. He kept racism alive with these unfair and decietful tactics. He did absloutely nothing to ehance race relations in NC. NC could have been further along in the 70's and 80' in race relations if it were not for Helms. Jesse Helms certainly leaves a legacy of hate which was more damaging to this country than a dispised filabuster in congress.

My sympathy goes out to the Helms family; but I think his stubburn stances on many issues will cause him to go down in the pages of history as an joke not a patriot. Its a terrible thing to be remembered as a hate monger. Everything good he did as a representative for NC is way overshadowed by his hate speach.
