John was my first contact at McGraw Hill. Through my years there, he was always helpful and kind...( No matter how panic-stricken I was about something). I am deeply saddened to hear about his passing. For my colleagues who know what I am talking about..."Sparkle sparkle" John (He always got a kick out of that.)

I am so sorry to hear the sad news about John. We were colleagues at McGraw-Hill and he was always so easy to work with, always a gentleman, often ready with a quip or joke or kind word to diffuse any disagreements. I'm pleased to recognize other names from those years on this page, and my best wishes to you all! JOE

I made my first trip to New York as an adult with John. By that time, I assumed that there were muggers on every street corner, and I was a little freaked out by the idea of being in NY. Upon hearing that, John reassured me that while there might be some bad parts of town, we wouldn't be anywhere near them, and then he proceeded to show me how great New York can be. We took me through the Waldorf Astoria, over to the ice skating rink and Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center, to Times Square, etc. He gave me tips about the train, taxis, and the subway. I came away with a completely changed attitude about New York.

From time to time, a care package would arrive from John -- he was so incredibly thoughtful. Some years ago he sent me a "happy plant" that was solar powered. When the sun would shine on the plant it would bounce up and down and you could not help but smile at it. My son, Joseph, loved that plant and was always asking me if he could have it. I told him that he could have it when he moved away to college. So, when we left him at his freshman dorm, I wrapped up the happy plant for him. All the kids in the dorm love the happy plant! John's friendship brought many happy moments into my life!

This photo was found as part of one of john's recent photo projects. It held special meaning for him.

Clarification: it is a photo of John that in later life he began to use as part of a photo project.

I selected this image for John's main photo because it shows him overcome with happiness. It doesn't matter that his eyes are closed... we all know that feeling.

For the past 5 years, John has been encouraging me to paint. He would tease, "Kathleen, I'm waiting for my 4' x 6' foot abstract. Have you started painting it, yet?" I had a break thru this past November ... and finally have my first exhibition of new paintings in 5 years. The paintings are very small but it is a beginning. We were planning to go see the show together.

I took this photograph while in Nebraska. John loved it and made it part of his art collection. It is of a Center Pivot Irrigation system. Basically a sprinkler that waters one full acre of farmland - it rotates from a center point like the hands of a clock.
