I don't have a memory, because I did not know Maria. But I have a great deal of respect for her. I am 42 ... she was 20. No matter what her "mother" says about her, or what her family say ... she was a talented, good person. One thing you can say is that she made it through Marine boot camp. I wouldn't make it through 2 hours of that. And she was keeping and looking forward to her child. She was beautiful. What I have seen and heard about her ... I would have liked to have known her. What a shame. What a waste. What a horrible, humiliated what to die and be found, especially to have been a Marine. We don't have to worry about what our foreign enemies will do to our military. We sometimes do worse right here. I have huge respect for Maria, and my heart just goes out to her and her baby. God bless and keep her, and give her the peace and support she obviously did not get here on this earth. Her "mother" should be ashamed. I bet Maria would have been a better mother to her child than her mother was to her.

While I did not know Marie personally, I feel for her. I understand her pain and suffering. I was a Marine myself and I was stalked and had felt my life mortally threatened twice. I got away and I am OK now. This DOES happen in the Marine Corp!

May you and your angel rest in God's arms. I can not fathom the terror you experienced and I pray every day for you. I hope your murderer is caught and you are resting in peace with your angel infant. You are a hero in my eyes for everything you survived, and what you didn't. May the Lauterbach find some peace in that their daughter, niece, cousin, sister is no longer living in fear and is at home with the Lord. RIP Maria.

First to the Lauterbach family... I am very sorry for your loss. I understand the pressure your daughter most likely faced while trying to report the incident to her command. I just retired out of the military after a four and half year commitment. Just being a women in the service its seems like there is already one strike against you, the first day you step off the bus at boot camp. Never mind having to deal with a situation like this one and actually doing the right thing. The military often looks the other way with things like this and it is very hard to prove your case. Not to mention you still have to work with the perpetrator and see him on a daily basis while the investigation is happening in most cases. There is a lot of red tape and flack you get from both the military and fellow service members. It is very unfortunate that the military still runs this way being the 20th century. I can relate to this because, I just went through a process were I was medically wronged by the military. However, I was scarred to report it completely, because of the unknown repercussions that I would have to face. There are a lot of clicks especially as you get up to the higher ranking personnel. They often team up and make it miserable if you are saying anything negative to offend the service or one of them. It was very intimidating because you are only taught "yes sir" or "yes mam" throughout your career. Plus the majority of the higher-ranking personnel are older than you, which also make for a difficult social situation. My condolences are with you and the rest of your family as you go through this somber time.

I didn't know Maria, but, I would like to convey my deepest sympathy to her family. I am an Onslow County citizen and I hope they find ...I won't call him a Marine !! He is not considered "The Few, The Proud" Mr. Laurean...So, justice can be served...God Bless you, as you look down upon us here on earth...

To the Lauterbach family, I am so sorry for your tragic loss. I too was a woman marine many years ago. As a woman in the Marine Corps sexual harassment still continues. I'm sure your daughter didn't pursue the rape issue because certain superiors would have made the rest of career hell!! I was sexually harassed in the Marines, and when I made an issue of it, it was a big mistake. I thought this kind of thing was over being that it is now 2008, but I guess not. My heart aches for you and it probably does not help to say that your daughter is in a better place. We can't ask why God takes the good and leaves the bad. Take care. Don't blame yourself for your daughter making the decisions she did. She was a marine and you will always be a marine Mom.

"Once a Marine, Always a Marine!" I realized words cannot help comprehend how this could happen to a fellow WM. For all my days I shall work to end violence against women in the military in honor of you and for your life that was cut so short during wartime. I shall leave the last sip in my cup to honor your courage and devotion under fire from an enemy within. We women from the Marine Corps, we know your strength; you remained a powerful warrior woman until the end. You fought for the very freedoms we all hold so dearly, “life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness…,” perhaps more valiantly than others. May your family come to know the full measure of your deep courage and bravery! And that by your life others will have safer lives in the future. ©WMVet1, 2008
